Home Security Guide
Securing your home is one of the growing domestic issues in today. Research
shows a troubling statistic that at least one home is broken into every minute.
Therefore, protecting homes and properties has become a priority and the advent
of Closed Circuit Televisions or CCTVs is timely to say the least and can
be employed for this purpose.
What is CCTV exactly? CCTV is a surveillance technology used initially to
monitor commercial properties and public places, but has been adapted to the
residential property to help home security. It is basically a camera, or a
network of linked cameras, that produce viewable and recordable images.
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) is not the panacea to all security and safety
problems that many people believe it to be. CCTV should only be part of an
integrated approach that considers all aspects of the security problems being
experienced. Installing a CCTV systems does not mean that your home is burglar
proof. All normal precautions still must be followed.
Follow the home security guide below to see if you miss out on any of the
precautions that you need to take.
1)Pretend to be a burglar and walk around your property and ask yourself:
How would I break in? Examine your house from the street, what are the most
vulnerable areas and, therefore, likely to be attacked? Remove the bushes next
to your window!
2)Do not leave keys under the mat!
3)Brace doorframes and put multiple locks on all outside doors.
The most common means of breaking into homes is simply by kicking in the door.
Most doorframes are made of 1 inch pine which saves the contractor money. This
makes them vulnerable to this basic assault. Multiple locks and bracing under
the molding make this kind of entrance unlikely and will not destroy the beauty
of your home.
4)Remember to keep all possible access to your house locked.
5)Treat inside garage doors the same as an outside door: multiple locks and
bracing.
Even though it is inside your home, it must be able to withstand a full out
assault. Often, the doors that access the house from the garage are hollow-core
and have cheap locks, which is why break ins through garages are so common.
6)Make sure security system is activated.
It’s only useful if it’s activated. Test it regularly to make sure it’s in good
working condition.
7)Use light timers.
It’s inexpensive and can be found everywhere and should be used daily and not
just when you are away.
Don’t tell other people the dates you will be on vacation.
Keep it on a need to know basis.
Lastly, If you return home and find that your house has been burglarized, don’t
touch or move anything. Leave the house immediately and call the police as the
burglar could still be inside the house.
