Believe it or not most home invaders gain entry by simply knocking on the front door. When the homeowner opens the door the burglar either forces his way in or uses several forms of deception. The deception can be as simple as posing as a repairman, delivery person, salesman, or someone in need of help.

More elaborate deceptions might include a “warm-up” call to the homeowner alerting him to a “delivery”. Another ruse might entail a “repairman” in the neighborhood fixing a “problem”.

Here are some tips to help you avoid being a victim.

–Install solid core doors, heavy duty locks, window security devices.

A latch with a chain will not work.

–Get a peephole for your front door and use it before opening the door.

–Turn your porch light on to see better.

–Keep all doors, windows and garage doors locked at all times.

–Have a game plan. At a family meeting discuss how to answer the door and who to call in the event of an emergency. Practice the drill.

–Have an alarm system activated by a window or door opening. The sound of a barking dog is still one of the most effective deterrents for burglary.

–Decide who to call in the event of an emergency. Sometimes the police cannot respond fast enough and may not be the best first responders.

–Have some non lethal self defense weapons such as pepper spray and stun guns at various locations though out the house.

If you are unfortunate enough to be a victim do what the burglars ask. Pay attention and get as much information as possible for a description for authorities.

Home Invasion is a rapidly growing type of burglary. With some knowledge and planning you can help keep your family safe and prevent any harm from occurring. If you think crime can only happen to the other guy you are wrong. The “other guy” is thinking the same thing and YOU are that “other guy”. There is a reason why they call it self defense. You have to protect yourself, your family, your home and business!!
